Thanks for taking a few minutes to read about our Rental Programs. Our violin rentals, viola rentals, & cello rentals for children and adults are probably the best programs around. A violin rental, viola rental, or cello rental from The Chimneys Violin Shop will assure you of the best instruments to learn on.
How are we different? We own and maintain all of our rental instruments and have been doing so since 1960. Because of their high quality, excellent sound, playability, and durability many of our rental instruments are old, made in the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's. Because of their age, many of them have "personality marks" that gives each one a unique look. In a time when most music stores rent mass produced instruments carved out on computer operated machines, we are proud of our old hand made ones. And, when they do need to be replaced, we replace them with the same high quality instruments made in factories that still make all the parts by hand and assemble them all by hand.
About our Rental Instrument Setups: Another way we are different is that we have a Master Violin Maker who sets up each of our rental instruments in the same way that he sets up one for a professional player. Why? Because if the instrument your child plays sounds good, instead of sounding thin and whiney, they are more likely to keep playing. A professional setup means that the bridge is made of high quality wood and is cut and fit in a professional way; the strings are world standard Dominant strings rather than inexpensive steel ones. We use high quality sound post stock and adjust each instrument for maximum balance and playability. We also adjust all the instruments sub systems to work together for an alive sounding instrument (music store personnel do not even know what the different sub systems are let alone how to align them). We want every child to have the opportunity to play on a fine sounding violin, viola, or cello. And because all of this is done in-house, we can still offer you lower pricing.
Our School Rental Program and our Adult Rental Program work the same way. They have two sides. The one side assumes you or your child will "fall in love" with the violin, viola, or cello and keep playing for a long time. So, our program is a Rent-to-Own program. When the value of the instrument is paid by your rent, you own the instrument (no more rental payments). On the other side, if you or your child decide that playing a bowed string instrument is not really what you enjoy doing, our program is a Month-to-Month rental program and you simply return the instrument to us with no further obligation.
Our School Rental Program: Since children grow and their instruments do not, your child will grow into larger instruments throughout their school experience. When they are ready for a bigger size, you simply return the one you are currently renting and get the next size bigger. When your child grows into a full-size instrument, you have two choices. First, you can continue to rent and when that instrument is paid off, it is yours (we will continue to hold your accrued rent as a trade-in so if at some point, down the road, you decide to up-grade to a better instrument, it will be there for you). Second, you can choose to use the accrued credit you have earned to purchase an instrument of your child's choice now rather than later.
Our Adult Rental Program:
Rent accrues as a credit towards a purchase as follows:
All the rent you pay accrues as a credit towards an instrument purchase, except:
On Violins: we keep a total of $75.00 of the rent you've paid
On Violas: we keep a total of $85.00 of the rent you've paid
On Cellos: we keep a total of $120.00 of the rent you've paid
This accrued credit does not expire unless you return your rented instrument.
Our maintenance program has a nominal fee but it covers any damage to the instrument, case, bow, or accessories while our rental instrument is in your possession. This includes broken strings, and any other accidental damage. There are two exceptions: Intentional damage and damage covered by other insurances, like a fire or flood.

Although we choose which instruments we are willing to rent, they are chosen from our sales stock and will be rented with payments that reflect that instrument's value.
